ESD Workbench Guide: Dissipative Tops, Earth Bonding & IEC 61340
An ESD workbench is for electronics and static-sensitive assembly — not a generic “anti-static” sticker on ordinary laminate. UK Workbenches manufactures ESD benches in Britain with a static dissipative laminate worktop rated below 1.0 × 108 ohms surface and surface-to-ground resistance, tested to IEC 61340 and ESD S4.1, with an earth bonding point fitted as standard and a wrist strap and coiled ground cord supplied.
Those figures describe the laminate surface performance under test conditions (including about 50% RH in the supplier datasheet). They are not a claim that every finished workstation is a certified ANSI/ESD S20.20 facility system — your floor, earth and process still matter.
What you get on our ESD benches
- Static dissipative laminate — about 20mm ESD laminate with MDF core on the anti-static electronics bench.
- Resistance — surface and surface-to-ground < 1.0 × 108 Ω (an order of magnitude tighter than a simple EN 438-style < 1.0 × 109 Ω expectation often quoted for “antistatic” laminates).
- Test references — tested to IEC 61340 and ESD S4.1 (laminate / surface testing language — say “tested to”, not “the whole site is certified”).
- Earth bonding point as standard, plus wrist strap and ground cord in the supply.
- 350kg UDL on a medium duty style frame (38×38×1.5mm SHS) — fully welded, delivered ready to use.
- Sizes typically from about 1000×500mm to 1800×900mm at 840mm working height, with common options for drawers, cupboards, shelving, pegboard, lighting rails and benchtop electrics.

When you need ESD (and when you do not)
Need ESD: PCB assembly, semiconductor-adjacent handling, sensitive instrumentation, any process where a static event can damage components or yield.
Do not buy ESD just for the label: general mechanical fab, welding, oily garage work — use steel or wood tops on the right duty frame instead. ESD laminate is the wrong consumable surface for hot work and heavy impact.
Bench vs full EPA
A dissipative bench is one control. A full electrostatic protected area also needs a thought-through earth, flooring or mats where required, trained operators, and handling rules. We supply the bench package with bonding point and wrist strap so you can earth an operator immediately — your quality system still owns the wider EPA design.
How to specify
- Confirm components are static-sensitive enough to justify ESD control.
- Choose size and 840mm height (or tell us a made-to-order height).
- Add storage, lighting and electrics only if they fit the EPA rules you run.
- Plan earth: bonding point + wrist strap is the start, not the whole story.
- Pair with 350kg UDL expectations — this is assembly duty, not a welding table.

Frequently asked questions
What is an ESD workbench?
A workbench built for electrostatic discharge control in electronics assembly — typically a static dissipative laminate top, a path to earth, and operator grounding (for example a wrist strap), not ordinary furniture laminate.
What resistance should an ESD workbench top have?
Our ESD laminate is specified below 1.0 × 108 ohms surface and surface-to-ground resistance, tested to IEC 61340 and ESD S4.1. Always follow your own process control limits.
Do you supply a wrist strap with ESD benches?
Yes. Our ESD benches are supplied with a wrist strap and coiled ground cord, and an earth bonding point is fitted as standard.
Are your ESD benches ANSI/ESD S20.20 certified as a full system?
We publish laminate test performance (IEC 61340 / ESD S4.1 language) and supply bonding hardware. Full facility or process certification is a wider EPA question — we do not claim the bench alone certifies your site to ANSI/ESD S20.20.
What load can an ESD workbench take?
Our anti-static electronics bench is rated 350kg UDL — appropriate for assembly, not heavy fabrication.
