How Much Weight Should a Workbench Hold? (UDL Explained)
What load capacity do you need for a workshop workbench? For most workshop assembly and bench work, 350kg UDL is enough. Engine work, fabrication and heavy vice work need 1,000kg UDL. Very heavy static production needs 1,500kg UDL, and welding or plate work up to 2,500kg UDL. UK Workbenches is a UK manufacturer that builds workbenches in Britain at each of these ratings.
For general assembly and light workshop work, around 350kg UDL is enough for most fixed benches. For heavy fabrication, engine work or welding you typically need 1,000kg UDL or more. UK Workbenches manufactures benches, mobile benches and trolleys from 200kg to 2,500kg UDL (uniformly distributed load), the figure that matters when you are buying industrial equipment, not a marketing βmax loadβ sticker.
This guide explains what UDL actually means, how it differs from a point load, and which rating matches common jobs. Ratings below are taken from our live product data for British-made benches and trucks.
UK Workbenches duty ratings at a glance
| Duty rating | UDL | Frame | Worktops | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medium duty | 350kg | 38Γ38Γ1.5mm square hollow section | 18mm laminate, MDF or galvanised steel | Assembly, packing, electronics, light workshop work |
| Mobile | 750 to 1,000kg | 50Γ50Γ5mm angle iron | 2mm galvanised steel or wood | Work that moves around the workshop |
| Heavy duty | 1,000kg | 50Γ50Γ5mm angle iron | 2mm galvanised steel or 44mm solid wood | Engine work, fabrication, garages, vice work |
| Super heavy duty | 1,500kg | 50Γ50Γ5mm angle iron | Galvanised steel or wood | Very heavy static production |
| Welding | up to 2,500kg | 50Γ50Γ5mm angle iron | S275 steel plate or perforated plate | Welding, plate and fabrication work |
UDL figures are the ratings on our live product pages. Fixed benches are 840mm working height as standard.
What UDL means (and why βmax loadβ is vague)
UDL β uniformly distributed load β is the weight the whole work surface can carry when the load is spread across the top. That is how industrial benches are specified in the UK.
A point load is different: a small footprint (a vice, a press foot, a heavy engine block sitting on one corner) concentrates force. A bench that is happy at 1,000kg UDL can still be wrong for an extreme point load if the worktop and frame are not suited to that job. If your load is concentrated, tell us when you quote β we will say if a thicker plate top, different frame, or different size is safer.

These are guide bands from our catalogue, not a substitute for engineering the job. Made-to-order sizes and non-standard heights can change how a bench behaves under load β we flag that on the quote when it matters.
Frame section and duty
- Medium duty β typically 38Γ38Γ1.5mm square hollow section, 350kg UDL on fixed benches. Browse medium duty workbenches.
- Heavy duty β typically 50Γ50Γ5mm angle iron, 1,000kg UDL on fixed benches. Browse heavy duty workbenches.
- Super heavy duty β heavy angle-iron construction, 1,500kg UDL on the main Super Heavy Duty Workbench.
- Welding β plate or perforated tops up to 2,500kg UDL in welding.

How to check a bench you already own
- Find the original rating plate or order paperwork for a UDL or βdistributed loadβ figure.
- If there is only a vague βmax loadβ, treat it with caution β ask what footprint the maker assumed.
- Look at deflection: if the top already sags under everyday tools, do not add heavy plant.
- Watch casters and underframes on mobile units β the top rating is useless if the wheel set is the weak link. See mobile workbenches.
- For a replacement, match the job (UDL + worktop + size), not only the old catalogue name.
Specifying load with UK Workbenches
We manufacture in Britain, fully weld, and deliver ready to use on manufactured benches. Standard working height is 840mm (welding benches often 900mm). Tell us the load type (distributed vs concentrated), approximate kg, and worktop preference β we will match a duty range or build to order.

Frequently asked questions
What load capacity do I need for a workshop workbench?
Around 350kg UDL for general workshop assembly and bench work, 1,000kg UDL for engine work, fabrication and heavy vice use, 1,500kg UDL for very heavy static production, and up to 2,500kg UDL for welding and plate work. UK Workbenches builds benches in Britain at each of these ratings; see the heavy duty and medium duty ranges.
How much weight should a workbench hold?
For general assembly, around 350kg UDL is a common industrial fixed-bench rating. Heavy fabrication and engine work usually need 1,000kg UDL or more. Welding benches in our range go up to 2,500kg UDL.
What does UDL mean on a workbench?
Uniformly distributed load β the weight the surface can carry when the load is spread across the top. It is not the same as a point load on a small area.
Is 1,000kg UDL enough for a garage workbench?
Often yes for engine and vice work on a fixed heavy duty bench such as our Steel Heavy Duty Workbench, provided the load is not an extreme point load.
Do mobile workbenches hold less weight?
Sometimes. See the product rating β for example the Steel Mobile Heavy Duty Workbench is rated for mobile use. Always check the product page.
What is the highest UDL workbench you make?
Welding benches up to 2,500kg UDL; the Super Heavy Duty Workbench is typically 1,500kg UDL.
